The Loyal Subjects Masters of the Universe Action Vinyl He-Man

The Loyal Subjects Masters of the Universe Action Vinyl He-Man Review

By the Power of Grayskull!!!! The Hero of Eternia, He-Man is brought to you by The Loyal Subjects!!!

I didn’t plan to go out and buy these figures and to start collecting the whole lot of them, but I am surely impressed with these figures. I am planning to pick up a few more of them and I already have Skeletor, Beast Man and Tri-klops on the way.

He-Man comes as a 3” figure with 10 different points of articulation. He also comes with his signature accessories, the Power Sword (Filmation) and his Shield. Strangely he doesn’t come with his Battle Ax. The weapons are painted a nice bright silver and it is also made from a very sturdy plastic.

He-Man comes with his awesome Filmation look. The details on him are impressive and I must say that the paint job on him are top class. There are no smudges or any areas that wasn't painted properly.  Even the Box Art is awesome!!!

He-Man also comes with a little Collectors Trading Card which also includes a little Bio on the figure. This is a nice little extra add on to the figure.

He-Man - (2/16 Chance of getting) is part of Wave 1 which also includes the following figures:

Skeletor - (2/16 Chance of getting)
Tri-Klops - (2/16 Chance of getting)
Beast Man - (2/16 Chance of getting)
Man-At-Arms - (2/16 Chance of getting)
Stratos - (2/16 Chance of getting)
Faker - (1/96 Chance of getting)
Teela - (1/48 Chance of getting)
Evil-Lyn - (1/24 Chance of getting)
Trap-Jaw - (2/16 Chance of getting)
Man-E-Faces - (2/16 Chance of getting)

Wave 1 will have 11 Figures in total.

These figures are blind boxed and is available in a box of 16 figures so you will receive one of more of each figure. The rare figures are Faker, Teela and Evil-Lyn.

Prince Adam is the 12th Figure in Wave 1, but he was the 2016 SDCC Exclusive Figure. Made in very limited numbers he came packaged on a blister card.

I am glad that I bought He-Man. He is a awesome little figure!  I think that the Loyal Subjects brings something different and new to the MOTU Figures and these figures will make a nice addition to any MOTU Collection!!!

Toy Collector: Marc Welgemoed

Interview with Toy Collector: Marc Welgemoed!

Welcome to my Second interview segment, where a collector answers 13 short questions. The same questions will be given to every collector appearing in this segment.

I’m really excited to welcome South African Masters of the Universe Collector, Marc Welgemoed onto the blog.

MOTU!: Before we start with the magic 13 questions, can you tell us a bid about yourself?

Marc: I am 42 years of age and live in Despatch, close to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. I am a law lecturer and also run a recording studio part-time. I love the 80s and everything it brought to the table, hence my love for MOTU.

MOTU!: 1. What inspired you to collect?

Marc: I always had a love for MOTU, since I got my first figure, He-Man, way back in 1983. The overall look and amazing quality of the figure, as well as the included mini-comics and card artwork, inspired me to collect more and more of these toys. When I went to high school, at the beginning of 1988, I stopped collecting, due to my interest in music escalating, and also because of the discontinuation of the original MOTU-toy line. I have, however, never forgotten my MOTU and never got rid of my action figures and playsets. During 2012, I made some inquiry about the availability of MOTU and found out about the Classics series and…well, now I have a substantial Classics-collection! I also augmented my vintage collection since 2012. My inspiration has therefore had to be my love for the toy line and the unforgettable childhood memories it brings along.

MOTU!: 2. How long have you been collecting?

Marc: From 1983…(can you believe!)

MOTU!: 3. What do you collect?

Marc: I only collect MOTU, but limit myself to the vintage- and Classics line. I have 2 200x-figures in my collection, but that line, as well as the New Adventures-line, had never been my focus. Apart from the action figures and playsets, I also have a collection of DVDs, mini-comics, Golden Books, as well as quite a number of Classics- and vintage figures and playsets mint on card.

MOTU!: 4. What’s your grail and favourite piece in your collection?

Marc: My grail…the Holy Grail of Motu, namely Eternia! And Cobus, I think I can share my gratitude towards you with all the readers – thank you once again for informing me about this awesome playset and assisting me to obtain it! I will never forget it and am very thankful towards you.

MOTU!: 5. What collectors inspire you?

Marc: Well, apart from you, there are quite a few who are inspiring, like Dewald De Lange, Dewald van Tonder, Jaun Vermaak, Jacques Bindeman, as well as overseas collectors like Joe Amato, James Michael Barksdale, Tom Ace, and many many more (sorry if I am leaving out names – it is not intentional, as I salute all collectors out there!). I just wish that I can meet some of these collectors in real life, because they are such great people.

MOTU!: 6. What is your most embarrassing moment as a collector?

Marc: Hahaha, well Cobus, you know this one, but let me share it with all the readers…I bought the vintage “Cliff Climber” and “Tower Tools” on Ebay for an excellent price. I was so excited about these accessories, but only when it arrived, I realized that, what I have bought, are ONLY the boxes, with nothing in it! I immediately checked the Ebay-advertisement again and saw that I made a mistake…but to this day, it is hilarious and I will never forget it!

MOTU!: 7. What is your favourite MOTU Filmation or 200x Series Episode or MOTU Mini Comic and why?

Marc: My favourite Filmation episode must be “The Witch and the Warrior”, in which an unusual partnership is formed between Teela and Evil-Lyn. With regards to 200X, the opening episode was quite good, where we learned more about Keldor. My favourite mini-comic is undoubtedly “The Search for Keldor”, because it features amazing characters like Clamp Champ, King Randor, Scare Glow, Ninjor and of course, the Sorceress. And, of course, the Eternia Towers also feature therein…

MOTU!: 8. What would you change about the collecting community?

Marc: I must be honest: I do not visit collector community-sites very often. However, having said that, the times when I have visited sites like He-Man.org, as well as your own page, MOTU Universe, made me realize how serious collectors are about quality and their love for MOTU. I therefore wish to say “Keep up the good work” and continue to inspire collectors, and especially new collectors, to nurture their love for MOTU. There is a lot of new collectors who require assistance in knowing where to get figures and playsets. Community sites can therefore attempt to assist them by providing information of this nature.

MOTU!: 9. Forums or Facebook groups?

Marc: I would prefer Facebook-groups, as I do not visit forums very often.

MOTU!: 10. What MOTU character do you most resemble?

Marc: Haha, this is a difficult one…maybe Sy-Klone. I am always in a whirlwind, busy with something! Somedays, I wish I have his speed and agility to get everything in a day done.

MOTU!: 11. Is there one thing that collectors may not know about you?

Marc: Well, back in 2012, I said to myself, “You are only going to buy the ‘boss’-figures in the Classics-line, namely He-Man, She-Ra, Skeletor, Hordak and King Hiss.” Yeah, right! Before I even received them, I bought another bunch of figures, because, if it is MOTU, I find it hard to resist! Due to running out of space (and also because collecting is expensive!), I now stopped collecting for a while…only to have bought some of the Super 7 MOTU Ultimate figures last weekend! It seems I am addicted to MOTU!

MOTU!: 12. I notice that a lot of SW collectors also collect comics (myself included). What do you think is the common factor that draws some people to both of these hobbies?

Marc: In my opinion, comics complement the toys. For me, there is (and has always been) something nostalgic in holding the actual toy in your hand, while reading the comic and see that particular character in a storyline. I therefore think that the two go hand in hand. The comics can also direct you interest in particular directions you will have never imagined. An example from my own experience, is my interest in the Powers of Grayskull-line, which, sadly, never got off the ground in 1987. I have read the MOTU Classics-mini-comics that came with Dragon-Blaster Skeletor, Thunder Punch He-Man and Snake Man-At-Arms, and that spawned my love for the POG-line. I immediately hunted figures like Preternia Disguise He-Man, He-Ro, King Grayskull, as well as Tytus and Megator. Later on, I was also fortunate enough to get the 3 dinosaurs, namely Tyrantisaurus Rex, Turbodactyl and Bionotops. My greatest find, also having a foundation in Preternia, was however the Eternia-playset. Therefore, never underestimate the power of a comic! Look what it brought to my collection!

MOTU!: 13. And finally, what is it about the hobby that has kept you collecting for all of these years?

Marc: I can undoubtedly say, and have said it before, the absolutely great memories from my childhood. The 80s where the best years of my life, and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, contributed probably more than half thereto. To this day, when I look at my collection, I am taken back to my childhood and the furious battles between He-Man and Skeletor. I will never never ever forget it!

MOTU!: Well thank you so much for joining me today Marc. It has been an immense pleasure and I’m sure my readers will enjoy reading your answers as much as I have!

Marc!: Thanks so much for granting me the opportunity to talk about my collection, Cobus! I really do appreciate it. Thank you for being such a good friend and all the best with your blog. And to all the readers out there: enjoy your MOTU and I really hope to meet you someday!

Toy Collector: Dewald van Tonder

Interview with Toy Collector: Dewald van Tonder!

Welcome all to my latest interview segment, where a collector answers 13 short questions. The same questions will be given to every collector appearing in this segment.

I’m really excited to welcome South African Masters of the Universe Collector, Dewald van Tonder onto the blog.

MOTU!: Before we start with the magic 13 questions, can you tell us a bid about yourself?

Dewald: Hi Cobus, Thank you for the opportunity to chat to you. I must congratulate you on your blog. It is quite fun and informative. I am 37 years old, live in Pretoria and love my dogs and have quite an extensive collection of succulents too. I normally go overboard when I collect.

MOTU!: 1. What inspired you to collect?

Dewald: I guess I never really moved passed the love for action figures and filmation. You just tell yourself that you are too old for that so you move on. Until I discovered e Bay and saw all the MOTU stuff listed and realized that there is an entire community out there that collects. So, I immediately jumped in.

MOTU!: 2. How long have you been collecting?

Dewald: I started collecting around June 2009.

MOTU!: 3. What do you collect?

Dewald: I mainly focus on 80’s lines. I also have some movie themes and then your normal DC and Marvel figures. My main collection is MOTU. I have almost all the vintage figures, vehicles and castles, 200X, Commemoratives and Classics. Anything MOTU is awesome. I also collect Thundercats, Turtles, but the vintage and classic stuff, A Team, Bionic Six, Filmation Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Matrix, Lord of the Rings and recently I succumbed to STAR WARS too. I have DC and Marvel figures as well and a small collection of Batmobiles and the Ecto 1 from Ghostbusters. Basically anything that I find cool and awesome I’ll look into. I’ve also recently started moving more towards statues which are in a class of their own and have a few novelty items too.

Some of the None MOTU Items Dewald Collects

PCS Sorceress Statue
PCS Skeletor Statue
Neca Trap Jaw Statue
PCS Teela Statue

MOTU!: 4. What’s your grail and favourite piece in your collection?

Dewald: I have a few items that I really, really love but my boxed King Grayskull (Normal and Bronze versions) is my grail I would say.

MOTU!: 5. What collectors inspire you?

Dewald: To be honest my biggest inspiration is the fellow SA collectors like you, Gerrit van der Merwe, Jaun Vermaak, Frikkie Stroebel, Daniel Dixon, Johan Cloete, Marc Welgemoed, Jacques Bindeman and Dewald de Lange. Each collector has a different approach to collecting and their own unique focus and excitement. I’ve learnt a lot from all of them and the community part of it all, where everyone tries to help each other, is really a great part of being a collector. I also have a friend in the US, Jason Swart, who has thought me a lot and always help to get items that I struggle to get. We actually became friends through E Bay, when I bought one of my early figures from him. Frikkie with his customization also takes this to a whole new level. I love his work. Very inspirational.

MOTU!: 6. What is your most embarrassing moment as a collector?

Dewald: My most embarrassing moment was not knowing who Han Solo was while engaging with a huge STAR WARS fan. I’m yet to live that one down.

MOTU!: 7. What is your favourite MOTU Filmation or 200x Series Episode or MOTU Mini Comic and why?

Dewald: The Dragon's Gift is a great episode where MAA is turned into crystal and He-man and Teela meets up with Granamyr to save him. I guess it is just a feel good story and I must say, Granamyr is just awesome. There are many of the mini comics that are very cool. Funny enough the cover of ‘Dragon’s Gift’ is one of the most memorable. The 200x cartoons are just awesome. They give all the back stories of the characters so I’ll have to say I love the whole lot. Just sad that the last episode was not made as an episode but remained in comic form.

MOTU!: 8. What would you change about the collecting community?

Dewald: Sites like He-man.org are such a huge positive for the community. I’ve relied on them for so much information and opportunities to have discussions and get views from international guys. But the collectors (not everyone) love to complain and act out. That would be one thing I would have wanted to change if I could. We all have our complaints but there is much to enjoy and so many positives and excitement in collecting.

MOTU!: 9. Forums or Facebook groups?

Dewald: Forums work better for me. I don’t know why but I just find them easier to interact with. Again, He-man.org has been one of the site forums I used to check out daily.

MOTU!: 10. What MOTU character do you most resemble?

Dewald: I love Orko. He always tries his best and wants to keep people happy. He makes a mess of things but still I can’t imagine MOTU without him. But, who I resemble, mmmm, it is a tricky question. I would have to go with Moss Man. He is seldom in the forefront but does good and plays his part. Kind of a behind the scenes kind of guy.

MOTU!: 11. Is there one thing that collectors may not know about you?

Dewald: Well, I’ve said it before, when I collect I tend to go big. I’m a completest and find it VERY hard to leave anything out.

MOTU!: 12. I notice that a lot of SW collectors also collect comics (myself included). What do you think is the common factor that draws some people to both of these hobbies?

Dewald: I don’t think you can see these ‘streams’ as separate. The cartoons, the movies, the figures and the comics. They all belong to the same universe. You might not collect everything but your heroes move between all of these. I love MOTU. So I collect MOTU comics as well. Not that I don’t like other comics but I don’t read the rest that much so I stick to MOTU. So, it is all part of the same cookie. Some just like the filling more than the biscuit. LOL!

MOTU!: 13. And finally, what is it about the hobby that has kept you collecting for all of these years?

Dewald: To me, it is the escape. Collecting is my escape world. The back stories, the process of getting your display done, the fascination of just looking at all of them in silence appreciating the art and the creativity, what they meant to you as a child and what their stories are to you now as an adult collector. Even remembering the issues, we had to go through to get some of these. The friends I’ve made is equally as awesome. People that understand where you come from and the appreciation of it all. Plus, I just love figures!!! I love it!!!

MOTU!: Well thank you so much for joining me today Dewald. It has been an immense pleasure and I’m sure my readers will enjoy reading your answers as much as I have!

Dewald!: Thanks Cobus! This was fun! It gave me a chance to just think about collecting and why I still enjoy it so much. All the best and may your blog go viral!!

Toy Customizer: Mike McEvil

Interview with Toy Customizer:  Mike McEvil

Welcome to another awesome Toy Customizer interview!!

As you know by now, toy customizing has quickly become an ever-increasing hobby thanks to adult-collector toy lines, and the slow pace at which they release new product. There’s nothing stopping you from creating your very own ideal action figure.

Today I am fortunate enough to be talking to one of the best Toy Customizers around, who goes by the name of Mike from Evil Mike's Customs.

Mike has made some awesome custom MOTU accessories since the line started. He has made a wide variety of things to supplement just about any character in the MOTU Line. I have been keeping an eye on his work for a while now and I must say he just keeps getting better and better.

MOTU!: Hi Mike and thanks for taking time out to do this interview with me. Ever since I saw your custom work I wanted to interview you. I must say that your creating awesome add-on accessories for our MOTU Figures. Can you tell us a bid about yourself?

Mike!: Thanks for the invitation to this interview! I really like the Masters of the Universe-collectors-community and how everybody shares their part of this hobby with each other. I'm really glad to get the chance to say something about my work as a customizer.

I live in the northern part of Germany and like most of us collectors and fan boys I got into MotU and other great toy lines during my childhood.

MOTU!: So Mike, how did you get started doing action figure customs?

Mike!: It all started in 2009 when I discovered the MotU Classics figures. I'd say it's part of my personality that I can't fully enjoy a franchise/toy line simply by consuming the products. I guess I simply need more to do with it. So I enjoy contributing to it by doing drawings, 3D renders or like in the last years mostly customizing. The first 'custom' I did was painting MotU Classics He-man's axe shield black to use it with Wun-Dar. And from that point I tried more and more different techniques to create those parts of MotU lore for my collection that weren't available on the official market: Dioramas, accessories or full custom figures.

MOTU!: How long have you been customizing figures and creating add-on accessory kits?

Mike!: I'd say since 2010 until now. I think I didn't start directly in 2009 because I needed to gather some courage to buy expensive figures and cut/paint/break them at first.

MOTU!: You do a lot of sculpting on your figures, not just the same old repaints seen elsewhere. What materials do you generally use to "make the magic happen"?

Mike!: Since I discovered 3d sculpting I do everything possible with the program 3d Studio Max and have the items printed by the company 'Shapeways'. However, if I have to sculpt something directly onto a figure I use the material 'Green Stuff' from Gamesworkshop.

MOTU!: Your paint jobs are very well done. Can you tell us a little on your technique for getting a sweet paintjob that gets past the pesky joint rub problem?

Mike!: Well, mostly the secret lies within using thin paint and applying two or three or even more coats of paint. That creates a very smooth surface and achieves the best results. The kind of paint is also a thing, of course. I use acrylic colors from 'Citadel' or 'Vallejo'. Those can be mixed with water to make them more liquid and they have a very nice silk mat shine that looks similar to the paints on the official figures.

The joint rub problem... the world would be so much better without it. I'd say you never can eliminate this completely. Even Mattel's figures have suffered of this problem if they have painted joints. I prevent that problem as often as possible by using figures with the right color so I don't have to paint the joints. If there is no other way you can disassemble the joints completely and sand down the parts that will rub against each other so there is more space between them or you can try to put some superglue (the one that doesn't get white) on the painted parts. The superglue creates a plastic-like coat that is very durable against the rubbing-off-issue. But be careful not to glue your joints together.

MOTU!: Any horror stories of something gone horribly wrong?

Mike!: At the beginning I didn't use acrylic, water-based colors but other colors that were oil-based. These needed several days to get dry, smelled unpleasant and sometimes never stopped to be sticky. I really ruined a few pieces with those colors. I guess those experiences are part of the game and every customizer knows them.

MOTU!: On the opposite end of blood loss, what has been your favorite custom to date? Not necessarily your favorite character, but one that just turned out exactly, or better, than you planned.

Mike!: One of my very early custom figures was a MotU Classics Dragon Blaster Skeletor. I personally liked that custom much more than the official version by Mattel and it's one of the figures I still regret having sold.

MOTU!: Do you have upcoming MOTUC customs that you're excited to be working on, or planning out?

Mike!: I'm currently working on quite an obscure variant. The New Adventures 'Battle Punch He-man' for MotU Classics. It's quite special to me because it's the first time I 3D-sculpted complete body parts. As there were no boots in the Classics line available that seemed to fit I tried to make my own boots and I'm really satisfied with the results.

Regarding the accessories, I created I'd say I'm very proud of all the different iterations of Skeletor's Havoc Staff as these were all items I put an incredible effort into to get them as right as possible.

MOTU!: Where can people see more of your work? Also, what is the best way for someone to get in touch with you for custom commissions?

Mike!: You can view my work on my Facebook at:  www.facebook.com/mike.mcevil

For custom work you contact me at:  evil_mike_comics@hotmail.com

My Shapeways Store is Evil Mike's Customs.

MOTU!: Thanks Mike, great talking with you! We are looking forward to see more new customs from you.

Mike!: Thank you so much! It was a pleasure to be interviewed by you!

Super7 Reveals MOTU Classics at NYCC 2016

So as you know by now, the big news from NYCC 2016 was that Super7 revealed their take on the Masters of the Universe. They call it the Ultimate Collection and the following figures were revealed:

He-Man
Skeletor
Ram Man
Teela
Faker

I must say that this was a wonderful idea from Super7 to release these figures with extra accessories that was previously issued with other figures. It is a master touch on the side of Super7!!

Other News:

1.    Super7 will use the same factory as was used before. There will be no difference in color or quality of plastic that will be used.
2.    No final decision on pricing, but it seem like the price rage could be $30 to $35.
3.    No final decision has been made on how the figures will be offered to Collectors. It could be offered via a Sub System or a Pre-Order System.
4.    It seems like we will be able to start ordering the figures in November or December.
5.    There will be 8 Figures in the Ultimate Collection and 8 Filmation Figures.
6.    More reveals will follow at a later stage.
7.    The packaging for the Ultimate Collection and the Filmation Figures will stay the same as the current packaging.

Let’s take a look at each figures:

He-Man:

He-man will be released with the following accessories:

Classic Head
Alcala Head

Skeletor will be released with the following accessories:

Classic Head
Alcala Head
Keldor Head

Something extra that I would liked to have seen released with Skeletor is the Keldor 200x Split Swords.

Ram Man:

Ram Man will be released in the Vintage Mini Comic Colors and also as seen on the Back Cards of the Vintage MOTU Figures. Ram will be released with the following accessories:

Classic Head
Classic Un-helmeted Head

Something extra that I would liked to have seen released with Ram Man is a Classic Head with open eyes.

Teela:

Teela will be released with the following accessories:

Classic Head
Classic Head, but painted Blonde
Battle Ground Teela Head
Snake Armor Classic Head
Snake Armor

Something extra that I would liked to have seen released with Teela a Golden Shield. This will enable collectors to own a Prototype Teela. (Teela with Snake Armor, Goddess Spear with Golden Shield)

Faker:

Faker  will be released with the following accessories:

Classic Head
Vintage Head
Battle Damaged Head
1 x Classic Power Sword
1 x Halve Power Sword
Alcala Power Sword
Ax
Shield

Something extra that I would liked to have seen released with Faker is his Red Vintage Mini Comic Armor and also as seen on the Vintage Back Cards. A great idea will also be to release Faker with his Classic Battle Damaged Armor.

Final Thoughts:

Super7 really kicked off with a bang. At this stage they are enabling new collectors to start collecting hard to find figures at a decent price. Hopefully this will kick Ebay Sellers in the bud. Thanks so much for Teela. I think she never had a re-lease before and she is one of the hard to find figures at this moment.

I think with Super7 leading the way a lot of Collectors will join the MOTU Family again.

Well done to Super7 and the team behind them. This is a job well done!!!
